Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my ingredient amounts different from another recipe I've used?

PieMinder uses baker's percentages calibrated for a consistent, home-baker-friendly dough. Every baker has a slightly different formula — the key is to find settings that work for your oven, your flour brand, and your taste, then save them.

What does "hydration" mean?

Hydration is the ratio of water to flour, expressed as a percentage. A 65% hydration dough (the default) is easy to work with and produces a classic chewy crust. Higher hydration (70–80%) creates a more open, airy crumb but is stickier and harder to shape. Lower hydration (60%) gives a crispier, denser result.

Why does the app recommend 65% hydration?

65% is a reliable starting point for most home ovens and all-purpose or bread flour. Once you're comfortable with the dough, try 68–72% for a more Neapolitan-style result.

My dough is too sticky / too dry. What should I adjust?

Small adjustments make a big difference. The slider lets you fine-tune in 1% increments.

What's the gluten-free mode?

Gluten-free mode uses a separate flour formula and defaults to 75% hydration, which GF flour blends typically need to achieve a similar texture. You can adjust the hydration for your specific GF flour blend.

Can I share my recipe with someone?

Yes — tap "Share This Recipe" on the main screen. The link encodes all your current settings. When the recipient opens it, the calculator is already set to your exact recipe.

The tip jar says I'm offline.

The tip jar requires an internet connection to process payment through Apple. Your calculator settings and recipe still work fully offline.

I made a tip purchase but nothing happened.

If a purchase was charged, Apple will have a receipt in your purchase history (Settings → [Your Name] → Media & Purchases). The tip is a one-time consumable — there's nothing to unlock in the app. If you believe there was an error, contact Apple Support at reportaproblem.apple.com.
